We, Eimear and Francis and our children, Aaron, Killian and Mia are the family behind Bonny Bó. We eat, sleep and breathe farming…… It is not just a job for us but a way of life for which we hold a great love for.
I, Eimear, hold a degree in Agricultural Science and Francis holds a level 5 green cert in Agriculture. My first choice would have been veterinary but failing to reach the points for this , I chose to study Ag science in UCD where I specialised in Animal Science. My love of dairy grew when I worked on the dairy farms in New Zealand.
For many years Francis ran a successful plant hire business after his parents got out of the milking business in 1999. In 2011, he decided to re-establish the dairy farm and began to build his beautiful herd of British Friesian cows. He is an excellent stockman with a very keen interest in machinery!! (He was bitten by the bug!!)
Farming has been part of both our lives since we can remember and we are thrilled to be raising our three kids in the same environment that we grew up in.

Our herd consists of 150 mainly British Friesian X dairy cows. We are passionate that in order to produce quality milk, the cow needs to be the top priority. Placing huge emphasis on cow health and fertility, as well as maintaining stress-free environments for our cows, is so important to us. We breed all our own female replacements on our farm, this way we know where they came from, how they were reared and that their health has been looked after since birth. Rearing healthy baby calves is essential to a healthy female joining the herd for breeding.
Our cows are milked by two lely robots. This means they choose when to be milked and are not herded in large groups, where they would all be milking at the same time. Milking this way gives the cows freedom to behave in their natural manner and creates a stress-free environment. You can watch exactly how it works: here
Our robotic system also plays a vital part towards our cows health as it alerts us when a cow’s rumination has dropped. This gives us an early indicator that she may be developing sickness or infection. This early intervention allows us to be selective in how we treat the problem.
We choose, where possible, to use natural products for treatment and our aim is to stay away from antibiotic use in the majority of cases. This system works really well for us and we are reaping huge benefits by using these immune boosting natural products. We have a full video on pursuing natural goodness with AHV, which you can watch: here
We believe that a healthy and happy cow will produce great tasting milk so this is a win for everybody.
